Osprey manufactures open style Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) systems for industrial wastewater treatment. DAF systems are liquid solids separators that effectively treat industrial wastewater by removing suspended solids, oils, fats, and grease along with associated pollutants. By utilizing dissolved air in the form of microbubbles, the systems lifts solids to the surface, where a skimming system removes them. Our standard DAF units are manufactured with 304 stainless-steel and are available in 316 stainless-steel. They are easy to operate, can be fully automated, and have a quick start-up procedure. 

Osprey uses a saturation pipe to dissolve air into water. This is a very simple process in which we use a centrifugal recirculation pump to pump from the clarified end of DAF unit to a spray nozzle in a pipe. The water sprays through an air pocket in the saturation tank at 90PSI. This process dissolves air in the form of microbubbles into the water thus creating whitewater. The whitewater is then distributed to the front end of the DAF unit where the wastewater is introduced. As the pressure is reduced, the air begins to precipitate from solution. The molecules of air attach themselves to the flocculated solids. The bubble with the suspended solids or oil becomes buoyant and float to the surface. This process combined with proper chemistry and well-designed equipment provides a sophisticated solids and FOG (fat, oil & grease) separation system.

Osprey utilizes a counter current skimming system that significantly shortens the sludge skimming distance and decreases the chance of solids carry over. On longer units the first third of the unit sees significantly more float load than the last two thirds. So we have split the skimmer into two. On D-200 units and above we utilize a two-drive system. The first drive assembly is on the first third of the unit and the second drive assembly covers the remaining two thirds of the unit. This also allows you to run the two different skimmer assemblies at different speeds. 

Flocculation (Floc) tubes are hydraulic flocculators that use the energy of the wastewater flow to mix the wastewater with chemicals, prompting coagulation and flocculation. Floc tubes are commonly used prior to Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) systems. Our floc tubes are constructed from PVC, CPVC, HDPE, or stainless-steel pipe mounted on a stainless-steel frame. Each unit has a pipe of two different diameters to improve mixing. The larger of the two pipe sizes is used in the straight pipe runs to provide gentle mixing and increase the hydraulic retention time. The smaller pipe size is used in two “mixing zones” to increase velocity and mixing.
